How to "J" upwards a Window or other wall penetrations .

First you need to install the proper drip cap (if needed) under the window.  Here in our area, we demand to install a reverse aluminum baste cap to the bottom of the window in society to meet the edifice codes in our expanse.  Inspectors similar to encounter the reverse drips have folded tabs that wrap around the bottom of the window like this.

If you need to learn how to cutting Drip Caps for Openings, just pop over hither.

Next nosotros need to cutting the bottom J-trim of the window.  I call this the Goaltender cutting. (maybe, because I alive in Canada, and love Hockey) Simply almost likely, because it reminds me of a goaltender with his arms out to the side… maxim "No Goal."

Cutting a manageable piece of J-trim most 3 inches longer then width of the window.  Next you are going to Cut &remove the dorsum section of the J-trim, almost one- 1.5 inches from the cease of your piece of J.   (We phone call this "gutting out the dorsum" or "cutting the guts out".) Leaving the front face intact and united nations-marred.

Now, hold your J-trim upward to the bottom of the window, making sure the side yous just cut is flush with the side of the window frame.  And then on the other side of the window, marking where the window frame touches the J-trim. Requite yourself about 1 to 1.5 inches extra beyond that mark and cut your piece.  Go dorsum to the pencil mark you just made and cut the guts out or curtailment section of the J-trim as you lot did on the other side.

You should at present take a J-trim piece that looks similar this.  (A Goal tender, with his artillery out) Boom that to the bottom of your window opening, and permit's continue moving.

How to cutting J-Trim pieces for the sides of a window or other opening.

Crude cut two pieces of J-trim for the sides of you window or other opening, ensure your pieces of vinyl J-trim are 5 inches longer then the window.  (longer if in cold weather, in case you get breakage.)

You tin figure out how deep into the J-trim you need to make your outset cutting past tucking the J-trim backside the bottom window J you but cut.  Hang it, ever and so slightly past the front face of the bottom J-trim, so the side trim sits a footling proud. Marker information technology with a pencil where the two trims meet.

Afterwards doing this for and so many years, I just know that about 1" should exist enough to give me enough length to cover the confront of the bottom J-trim in one case I am done cutting.   You can eyeball it, and trim the piece after it is nailed on.

first cut on vinyl j trim for upright

Cutting your piece on a 45 caste angle. (ane)   Yous can see in the movie below that I practise not cutting right from the leading edge of the trim slice.  Rather about ¼ ' from the rolled edge. I practise this, because over fourth dimension the vinyl trim will shrink. If I cut it at too steep of an angle, over fourth dimension you will cease up with a gap in your trims.

However, lots of professional siding installers will cut the J's to a sharp point.  It's not wrong, simply different. I similar to go back years subsequently, to a project I have completed and see that my J'trims are yet slap-up and tidy without whatever gaps.  (each to his own)

Adjacent, roll the J-channel i quarter turn, and then yous are looking at the side of the trim and make another 1" cut, on a 45 caste angle in the same direction equally the first cut. (ii)  The tips of your siding pair of scissors or snips should be pointing at the same direction & angle as your starting time cut.

Finally,  Curl the J- Channel another ¼ plow,  then you are looking at the dorsum side of the trim slice.  You should exist looking at the side with the nailing flange on it.  You will cutting about i" on a 45 degree angle, with your siding pair of scissors /snips pointing in the opposite direction of your first two cuts. (3)

This 3rd cut, nips out a triangle piece from the back edge.  And will go out you lot with a free moving, foldable tab.

This moveable tab is used to lock the two pieces together.

Slip the newly cutting side J-trim into the bottom window trim once once more, and marker just shy of where the ii pieces meet on the bottom J-aqueduct & trim information technology and then the bottom J will definitely tuck inside the J-channel for the side of the window.  At present slide the "side window "trim over top of the bottom J-trim, and fold the tab nether the window until yous hear or experience it click into the rolled confront of the bottom J-channel. Nail it on & repeat for the other side of the window.

How to Cut Vinyl J-Trim to go over the peak of an opening – Similar a window, door, vent or electrical penetration.

Make sure you have the proper drip cap installed over summit of your opening.  Again in our expanse the inspectors like to see folded aluminum drip caps installed over opens with at to the lowest degree 1' gap.  This gap is for h2o management. The theory behind this manner of drip cap is that h2o cannot fight gravity. The one inch space allows water to free fall off a vinyl trim piece, rather than climb/walk upward behind a trim piece; potentially forcing water under the building paper, or into window frame openings.

Cut a manageable piece of J-channel about 3 – four inches longer so the window width.  (longer if you are siding in cold atmospheric condition, equally y'all may get breakage once y'all start cut.)

Tuck the piece into the two upright side pieces that you nailed to the side of the window.   Slide the top trim piece and so that information technology is but a smidge longer than the side window J-trim. Make sure information technology is non flush, you want information technology sits a bit proud and hang over the side trim.

Mark where upright "side" j-aqueduct meets the bottom face up of the "peak" j-trim.  Pull the piece out and make your 1-2-3 cut, remembering to roll each time ¼ inch afterwards each i" cut.

Nip the J-trim on the side of the window,  and so the top channel will fit over top of it neatly.   Fold the moveable tab downwards until it locks into place.

Side by side, moving to the other side of the window, repeat the marking steps of where the j-channel meets the bottom face up of your height trim.  Then mark slice to length or where yous want the trim to stop. (this cutting should be just proud of the side J-trim. The 1/8 over hang will allowing the vinyl to shrink over time and not evidence any gaps.)

Finally, click or seat the top J-Aqueduct piece into place by folding the movable tabs downwardly into the side window j-trims until you lot hear them click.   Nail her on.
